We get this message every week, and the answer is almost never what the sender expects: cloudy water is not a problem. It's a diagnostic. The color tells you which of five causes you're dealing with — and only one of them is an emergency.
The color test: read the cloud before you touch the water
Here's the counterintuitive part. Your tank is not trying to die. It's trying to tell you something — and it speaks in color. White, green, grey, milky, or bubbles: five clouds, five causes, five different treatments. Treating the wrong one is worse than doing nothing.
Angle 1 — White cloud: the new-tank panic (and the saltwater trap)
If the tank is new (under a month), white cloud is the cheapest scare in the hobby. It's a bacterial bloom — heterotrophic bacteria exploding in response to fresh nutrients. It looks like the end of the world and it's actually the beginning of biology: the cycle is waking up. Leave it alone, keep feeding minimal, and it clears on its own in 48 to 72 hours. We call it the 48-hour rule: the cloudiest week of your tank's life is the week its biology woke up — and the worst thing you can do is "fix" it with a big water change, which restarts the clock. On our test floor in Foshan, every new system runs through the same white bloom in its first week, and we've learned to leave it alone. It's the only cloud we're happy to see.
If the tank is saltwater and the cloud appeared after dosing , it's different: it's a calcium or carbonate precipitate — the water chemistry moved too fast and minerals fell out of solution. Check your KH swing and slow your dosing. Same white color, completely different cause.
Angle 2 — Green cloud: the algae bloom that won't wait
Green water is not a bacterial bloom. It's a planktonic algae bloom — and unlike white cloud, it will not clear on its own. It's a nutrient and light problem: too much light, too much nitrate and phosphate, and the algae outgrows everything else.
Green cloud has only two exits: cut the light and cut the nutrients. Reduce the photoperiod, hold the 0-0-40 line (nitrate under 40, phosphate under control), and if you want the engineered solution, a UV-C sterilizer clears green water in days — it's the difference between waiting for the algae to starve and making the algae extinct. Angle 3 — Grey or brown cloud: the dust bowl
Grey cloud is physics, not biology: suspended particles. New sand that wasn't rinsed, fresh filter media shedding dust, decor that released sediment, a rescape that stirred the bottom. It's harmless and it settles — but "settles" is the key word: if the source isn't removed, every water movement brings it back.
The fix is mechanical: fine filter pad, filter sock, or just time and patience. The prevention is the rinse: wash new sand until the water runs clear before it ever touches the tank. Five minutes of rinsing saves five days of waiting.
Angle 4 — Milky cloud and surface film: the overfeeding report
A milky, slightly greasy cloud — often with a film on the surface — is the tank's way of saying it's being overfed. Excess food and waste feed heterotrophic bacteria faster than your filtration can process them, and the protein film on the surface is the same story in a different form.
The fix is the feed-budget rule (two minutes, twice a day — see our ammonia guide) plus mechanical filtration and a surface skimmer to break the film. Cloudy water from overfeeding is the only cloud that comes back every day until you change the habit, not the water.
Angle 5 — Microbubbles: the harmless alarm
If the cloud is actually millions of tiny bubbles, nobody's dying and nothing's wrong — it's aeration. A protein skimmer, a pump pulling air, a return line with a leak. The three-question protocol
Before you change any water or add anything, ask the three questions — in order:
- What color is the cloud? White, green, grey, milky, or bubbles — that's your cause category.
- How old is the tank? Under a month: bacterial bloom, leave it. Over a month: suspect feeding, nutrients, or a recent change.
- What changed recently? New sand, new fish, new medication, a filter pad washed under tap water, a dosing adjustment? The history is the diagnosis — cloudy water doesn't appear from nowhere, it appears after something.
