A customer once asked us whether a small desktop aquarium would be enough for two goldfish.
The fish were only a few centimeters long, so the tank looked spacious.
The problem was not what we could see that day.
It was what those two fish would become.
Goldfish are often sold as beginner fish, but they are frequently kept in aquariums designed for their purchase size rather than their adult size. Depending on the variety, a mature goldfish can become surprisingly large. They also eat well, produce considerable waste and require much more filtration than their reputation as a “simple fish” suggests.
Goldfish are easy to buy. That does not mean they belong in a small bowl.
How Large Should a Goldfish Aquarium Be?
There is no single tank size suitable for every goldfish.
Fancy goldfish such as Orandas, Ranchus and Fantails generally have shorter bodies and different swimming behavior from long-bodied varieties such as Common Goldfish and Comets.
For two fancy goldfish , we would normally start thinking around 120–150 liters or more , with additional volume as more fish are added.
Long-bodied Common Goldfish and Comets can grow larger and swim much more actively. They benefit from substantially more space, and large individuals may eventually be better suited to very large aquariums or ponds.
But volume is only part of the decision.
A long aquarium with generous swimming area is generally more useful than a narrow, unusually tall tank of similar volume.
Goldfish need usable water, not impressive-looking liters.
Why Goldfish Need Serious Filtration
This is where many small goldfish aquariums fail.
Goldfish eat frequently and produce substantial solid and dissolved waste. That waste contributes to ammonia, which must be processed by the biological filtration system:
Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate
Mechanical filtration captures feces, uneaten food and suspended particles before they continue breaking down.
Biological filtration provides surface area for nitrifying bacteria.
Both matter.
For a small aquarium, a properly sized external or internal filter may be sufficient. For larger custom goldfish displays, a sump can provide more space for mechanical media, biological media and equipment.
At Ruibit, we prefer to size filtration around fish biomass and expected feeding load , not just the number of liters printed on the aquarium specification.
A 500-liter tank with a few small fish and a heavily stocked 500-liter goldfish display are not the same filtration problem.
What Equipment Does a Goldfish Tank Need?
The essential equipment list is relatively simple:

Notice that a heater is not automatically on the essential list.
Goldfish are generally cool-water fish and often do not require the tropical temperatures used for species such as discus or arowana. What matters is keeping conditions appropriate for the particular fish and avoiding unnecessary temperature instability.
More Pump Flow Is Not Always Better
Because goldfish need good filtration, owners sometimes assume they should install the largest pump possible.
That can create another problem.
Fancy goldfish, particularly round-bodied varieties, are not always strong swimmers. Excessively concentrated flow can make them work continuously just to remain in position.

The objective is to move waste toward filtration while avoiding uncomfortable high-velocity zones.
Good circulation moves the water. It should not push the fish around the aquarium.
Oxygen and Surface Movement Matter
Goldfish and the bacteria inside their biological filter both depend on oxygen.
Surface agitation from the filtration return can improve gas exchange, while an air pump and air stone can provide additional aeration where required.
This becomes more important when stocking density increases or water temperature rises, because warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen.
If goldfish repeatedly gather near the surface and breathe rapidly, do not simply add more food or assume they are “begging.”
Check water quality and oxygenation.
Buy the Tank for the Adult Fish
A small goldfish in a large aquarium can look almost lost.
That is not a problem.
The opposite situation is.
Before choosing the aquarium, decide which type of goldfish you want, how many you intend to keep and how large they are likely to become. Then plan swimming space, filtration capacity, circulation and maintenance around that future population.
