The pond keeper's question comes with five years of history behind it: "The box says 'permanent media.' So why is my ammonia creeping up after all these years?"
The box was right about the plastic. The box was wrong about the biology. The plastic frame of a bio-ball will outlast the pond, the pump, and possibly the pond's owner. But the filter is not the plastic — the bacteria article settled that: the filter is the surface, and the surface is the only thing that ages. The media does not die dramatically, like a pump or a heater. It fades — the way the lamp dims from the thermal article, the way the canister clogs from its own article: quietly, in the pores, where nobody looks.
Here is the sentence that explains every mysterious ammonia creep we have ever diagnosed: media is the lamp that dims without a number on the box. The lamp has its L70 printed in fine print; the media has "permanent" printed in bold. Both are marketing with a relationship to the truth. Every liter of ceramic, every bio-ball, every bag of "never replace me" media has a birthday — and the only place that birthday is recorded is on a calendar nobody keeps.
1. The box says forever
Read the packaging and the industry has agreed on a single word: permanent. Ceramic rings that never need replacing. Bio-balls that last a lifetime. Media sold as furniture — buy it once, forget it forever. The claim is half true in the way that matters least: the physical object does last. The plastic ball does not dissolve. The ceramic ring does not melt. What the box never mentions is that the object is not the filter. The surface is the filter, and the surface is doing something the box does not print: it is filling up.
The aging is invisible because it happens in the pores. A piece of ceramic media is a sponge made of stone — channels, cavities, and surface, all measured in the square meters the packaging loves to advertise. Every one of those channels is a collector. Over months and years, the pores fill with organic sludge, with biofilm debris, with the fine sediment that no mechanical stage catches completely. The advertised surface area does not disappear — it is covered. The channels do not vanish — they are sealed. The bacteria do not die; they run out of room, a little at a time, and the ammonia test is the only instrument that notices, months after the capacity started fading.
2. The three aging processes
Three things happen to media while it sits in your filter, and none of them are printed on the box.
Pore fouling. The big one. The channels fill with sludge, and surface that is covered is surface that is gone. This is why the weight test works: media that is full weighs more than media that is new. A bio-ball or ceramic ring that has doubled in heft has not gained muscle — it has gained the tank's history, packed into its pores. The media that looks clean on the outside is the media that is full on the inside, because the dirt is always inside the pores. That is the trap: the outside stays presentable, like a house with a full basement, and the ammonia test is the only one who ever goes downstairs.
Physical decay. Ceramic is brittle, and cheap ceramic is brittle on a schedule. Over the years, rings crumble — tiny fractures, chips, dust — and the dust is not harmless; it re-enters the water column and the mechanical stage has to catch what the biological stage is shedding. Bio-balls age differently: the plastic stiffens and embrittles under heat and, in a lit sump, UV exposure. The ball that flexed when it was new cracks when it is old, and every crack is surface that has stopped being structure.
Scaling. In hard water, calcium and mineral deposits build on the media, coating the surface the way scale coats a kettle. The deposit is not organic, so it does not rinse off; it is chemistry, and it is permanent. Media in hard-water systems ages faster, and no amount of squeezing restores the surface the scale has claimed.
3. The birthday rule
So here is the rule the stockroom runs on, and the one to write on your calendar: every liter of media has a birthday — mark it on the day it goes in the filter, and replace it on a term. The terms, from our records: ceramic media, eighteen to twenty-four months; bio-balls, two to three years; mechanical media, on the schedule the canister article gave you — rinsed monthly, replaced yearly. The dates are not gospel; they are the terms the fouling curve actually follows, and they are the difference between replacing media on a plan and discovering it has been dead for a year.
Two disciplines make the birthday rule work. Stage the replacement: never swap the whole bed at once — that is how you kill the colony and restart the countdown, the same mistake the canister article warned about with hot water. Replace in thirds, weeks apart, so the bacteria never lose the whole workforce in one afternoon. Audit with the ammonia test: the test kit is the only reviewer that counts the covered surface, and a system that tests clean on schedule is a system whose media you can trust until its birthday. The media does not look different on its last day. It looks exactly the same as it looked on its first — which is the whole point of the box's boldest claim, and the whole reason nobody believes the calendar.
And the business note, for the distributors: this is why media is the subscription business of aquatics. The tank sells once; the media sells forever — the bacteria article said it, and the birthday rule is the mechanism behind it. Media that had a birthday is media that gets reordered on a schedule, by every customer who learned the date.
The dated shelf

A liter of media is not forever. It is a contract with a term — and the term is printed nowhere but your calendar. The box says permanent, and the box is telling the truth about the plastic and nothing else. The surface is the filter, the surface fills up, and the fill is invisible until the ammonia test finally looks. Write the date on the bag the day you open it, replace on the term, and stage the swap so the colony never clocks out. The media will not remind you of its birthday. That is the job you were given the day you bought it — and the day you forgot is the day the ammonia started keeping the calendar instead.
