When the tests read zero while corals brown, pale, or lose tissue, the test kit is not wrong; it is incomplete.

Standard test kits measure inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus ( $NO_3^-$ and $PO_4^{3-}$ ). They fail to measure Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) — the continuous buildup of proteins, amino acids, and cellular residue from feeding and fish waste.
