Last Thursday a distributor in the Netherlands sent me a twelve-second clip of two 100-gallon tanks he'd just uncrated. Same order, same week, same lights on both. And one of them — you could see it even on a phone screen, shot at arm's length — was green. Not aquarium-green, not algae-green. Just... dirty, like the water itself had a tint to it.
His first theory was the pump. Then the silicone. Then, I swear, the fish food. He ran carbon, he cut the lighting hours, he did two 50% water changes in four days, which is a lot of work when the tank holds close to four hundred liters. Nothing moved the color. Which makes sense, looking back: nothing he tried had anything to do with the problem.
The clip bothered me, honestly, because the tanks came from us. So I asked him to do one dumb thing: take a photo of the glass edge, straight on, against a white wall. That photo — and I've seen a hundred like it since — showed a clean green line running the whole length of the pane. Float glass. Somewhere between our factory and his dock, a float-glass tank had been loaded into an order that should have been ultra-clear.
So what actually causes the green
Glass is made from sand, and sand brings iron with it; float glass keeps enough of that iron that a thick pane reads green along its edge. Low-iron glass — the stuff most people call ultra-clear, they're the same family — starts from sand with the iron mostly taken out. Nothing exotic about it. It's just cleaner raw material.
Where it shows is the catch. Light travels through the front pane, bounces off the fish, then travels through the same pane again on its way to your eye — so whatever tint the glass has, your fish get it twice. A difference you'd measure as maybe two percent on a datasheet (standard float usually quotes around 89–90% transmission; Ruibit's spec sheet rates its ultra-clear at 91.5%) becomes the whole look of the tank at twelve millimeters thick. It's why a white fish, or white sand, or a bright red parrot cichlid, goes gray-green in front of float glass while the same fish pops in the tank next to it. Your eye doesn't average two percent. Your eye just sees "clean" or "dishwater."
Funny thing is, the tank in that video was the exact model we sell as our 100-gallon ultra-clear line ($766–2,240 depending on size). The glass spec is right there in the listing. Which is why my rule for any buyer, and I don't bend on it, is: get the glass type in writing before the container loads, because after it loads it's too late to argue about what's inside the crate.
Where it bites hardest
The green shows up worst in three situations, and all three have the same root cause.
Bright fish first. Goldfish, parrot cichlids, arowana — they lose saturation before anything else does. Second, white substrates and light backgrounds; they reflect the cast instead of hiding it. Third, marine tanks. Reef lighting is where float glass goes from "slightly off" to "unusable": blue actinic light exposes iron the way a flashlight exposes dust, and a float-glass reef tank glows green under coral LEDs no matter how good your skimmer is. I've had reef keepers send us photos asking if their water was poisoned. It wasn't. It was the pane.
That's why the low-iron 100-gallon reef system we build (200–375 L, complete with integrated sump, cabinet in white/blue/black, pump, LED and media) is low-iron as standard. Not as an option, not as an upsell. Marine tanks in float glass are a return waiting to happen, and returns — the freight, the restocking, the unhappy customer — cost more than the glass upgrade ever would.
Related problems, same root
Once you're looking for iron, you start seeing it everywhere. That gray-green cast on a white fish in a cheap tank? Glass. The reef that looks like it's underwater in a swamp under actinic light? Glass. Even the subtle "aged" look on a display tank that's only six months old — people blame the lighting schedule or the substrate, and nine times out of ten it's the pane they never checked.
The fix, on every one of those cases, is the same boring one: ask what glass is in the crate, in writing, before you pay. Any serious factory can tell you the glass brand and the transmission number on the spec sheet; if they can't, that's your answer. And if you want to be really sure — which I recommend, because I've been burned on both sides of this argument — order a single unit first. MOQ on our fish tank lines is one piece, lead time is seven days, and one tank sitting next to your current stock, lights on, tells you more in an hour than any datasheet will.
This is what low-iron looks like at 100 gallons — the edge reads clear, and the fish read true. Compare it with a float-glass tank under the same lights and the decision stops being about spec sheets.
Where I'd still buy float, honestly
I don't want to oversell this. Float glass has a place: promo tanks headed for price-driven channels, small tanks under roughly 40 gallons where the pane is thin enough that nobody sees the tint, setups that will live in dim corners where the difference never shows. If that's your market, buy float and keep the margin. But the moment you're selling a display tank over 200 liters to someone who'll light it properly and look at it every day — living room, office, lobby — the two percent is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy, because it's the one component nobody ever upgrades later. You swap a noisy pump. You replace a weak filter. A green tank you live with for years, and so does your customer's opinion of your brand.
That Dutch distributor, by the way? We shipped him the correct ultra-clear tanks on the next container, freight on us. Cost us real money. Cost us far less than losing the account would have. The glass question isn't really about the glass — it's about whether your supplier can tell you, in writing, what you're actually getting. Ask the question before you pay, and if the answer's vague, walk. There are plenty of factories that will put it on paper.
