"I'm planning the switch to saltwater. Which of my freshwater equipment can I keep?"
The honest answer surprised him: almost everything — the tank, the heater, half the test kits. But the equipment you keep isn't the point. The equipment you add is. And everything you add exists for one reason: the water.
The equipment gap is a water gap
Here's the counterintuitive part. The freshwater hobby is built around the filter. The saltwater hobby is built around the water — and that one shift changes the entire equipment list.
A freshwater tank is a filter with a fish in it. Tap water, a decent filter, a heater, and you're done — the fish were bred in tanks and can tolerate what comes out of your faucet.
A saltwater tank is a water plant with a window. You don't just put water in it. You make the water, mix the water, monitor the water, and process the water — and each of those jobs is a piece of equipment. That's why the list is longer and the budget is roughly three times bigger (see our 3x rule). You're not buying a bigger hobby. You're buying a small water factory.
What you can keep: shared equipment, different standards
The tank. Keep it. Glass is glass.
The filter. Keep it — but understand its new role. In freshwater, the filter is the heart of the system. In saltwater, the filter is just the bacteria's housing (see our bacteria guide) — the heart is the water, and the water's main organ is a protein skimmer. A freshwater canister filter works in saltwater; it's just no longer the most important machine in the room.
The heater. Keep the concept, change the material. In freshwater, a glass heater is fine. In saltwater, the heater must be titanium — a stainless or copper element will corrode in saltwater and slowly poison the tank (the same reason chillers use titanium coils — see our chiller guide). Titanium heaters cost more. They're not a luxury; they're the only kind that survives the water.
The light. This is where budgets quietly explode. A freshwater plant tank runs happily at modest PAR — a few tens of units. A coral tank wants a hundred or more, and SPS corals want three times that. If you're keeping corals, the light is the single biggest equipment investment you'll make, and it's the one place where "good enough" isn't.
The test kits. Keep the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH kits — they're the same chemistry. Then add the saltwater set: salinity (a refractometer, not a floating hydrometer), alkalinity, calcium, and phosphate. Freshwater tests four numbers. Saltwater tests eight, and it tests them weekly.
The water factory: saltwater-only equipment
Here's the saltwater equipment that has no freshwater equivalent, in the order you actually need it:
1. RO/DI — the water maker. Tap water runs at a TDS of 100 to 300 — dissolved solids, metals, phosphates, nitrates. Freshwater fish shrug. Corals notice everything. RO/DI brings TDS to zero, and zero is the only number that's safe. We call it the TDS-zero rule: in saltwater, the water you start with determines every problem you'll never have.
2. Synthetic sea salt — the water mixer. Not "salt for your tank." A carefully formulated mix of marine salts and trace elements, dissolved and aerated before it ever touches the display. Mixing saltwater is a weekly ritual, not an emergency.
3. Protein skimmer — the water processor. The one machine that makes saltwater possible. It removes dissolved organic waste before it becomes ammonia — foam is the point (see our skimmer guide). In saltwater, the skimmer is not optional. It's the difference between weekly maintenance and daily crises.
4. Refractometer — the water monitor. Salinity drifts with every evaporation, every water change, every accident. A refractometer reads it in thirty seconds, and it's the cheapest insurance in the marine hobby. Hydrometers drift; refractometers don't.
5. Wave pump — the water mover. Only if you keep corals. A wavemaker turns static water into flow, and corals need flow the way fish need food (see our wavemaker guide). Fish-only tanks can skip it.
What you don't need: the not-needed list
The marine market loves selling beginners machines they don't need yet. Here's the honest list of what to skip on day one:
- Calcium reactor or doser — a reefkeeping tool for SPS-dominated tanks with real calcium demand. A beginner tank with soft corals and LPS doesn't need it; weekly water changes cover the demand.
- Ozone — a serious tool for serious systems. Not for beginners, full stop.
- UV sterilizer — useful for green water and pathogens, not required at the start (see our cloudy water guide for when it earns its place).
- Auto top-off — genuinely convenient, genuinely not essential. A manual top-off habit works fine, and it forces you to look at the tank every day — which is the most valuable maintenance in the hobby (see our sump care guide).
Where the money actually goes
Here's what nobody tells you about marine budgets: the tank is the cheapest part. The expensive part is the water factory — RO/DI unit, sea salt (monthly, forever), the skimmer, the refractometer, the saltwater test kits, and a titanium heater that costs twice what the freshwater one did.
Walk into our two test rooms in Foshan and the difference is written in the machines. The freshwater room: a row of canister filters, a shelf of tap water, done. The saltwater room: RO/DI unit in the corner, salt mixing barrel, a skimmer on every tank, refractometer hanging on the wall, test kits lined up like a pharmacy. Same square meters, a completely different water story.
That's the honest equipment guide. Freshwater asks for a filter. Saltwater asks for a water plant — and the plant has a monthly operating cost, a weekly maintenance routine, and a daily reading. It's more money, more machines, and more discipline. But the tanks at the end of that discipline are the ones that make people stand still in front of a window and forget to leave.
Buy the water factory, not the prettiest tank. The tank is the display; the water is the animal.
