From the water-testing bench of the Ruibit Aquarium factory, Foshan — where every tank is tested every morning before the lights come on — a customer sent us a message at midnight.
"The fish are gasping at the surface," he wrote. "The water looks perfect. Crystal clear. What's wrong?"
We asked one question back: what do the test numbers say?
"I don't have a test kit," he said.
That is the whole problem in one sentence. The most dangerous water in the world looks exactly like the safest water in the world. Clear is not clean. And the three numbers that decide whether your fish live — ammonia, nitrite, nitrate — are invisible, tasteless, and silent. They don't warn you. They just count down.
The ladder: three rungs, one direction
Every aquarium is a waste-processing plant. Fish eat, fish excrete — ammonia is produced. Bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite. Other bacteria convert nitrite to nitrate. That is the ladder, and every tank starts climbing it on day one.
Ammonia is the top rung and the most toxic. Nitrite is the middle rung and almost as dangerous. Nitrate is the bottom rung — the least toxic, and the only one you manage with water changes instead of panic.
Ammonia: the silent burner
Ammonia comes from everything your fish do: excretion, uneaten food, a fish that died behind the rocks, the stress of a new arrival. It burns gill tissue and attacks the nervous system. At low levels it stresses; at high levels it kills — and the fish gasping at the surface is the late stage, not the early one.
Two numbers matter. Total ammonia is what your test kit shows. Free ammonia (NH3) is what actually hurts the fish — and the ratio between them is controlled by pH. Raise the pH by one point and the toxic fraction jumps roughly tenfold. We call it the pH trap: the same tank, the same ammonia reading, and one careless pH swing turns a stressful level into a lethal one.
The target is always the same: 0 ppm. There is no safe amount of ammonia in a stocked tank. Zero is not a goal. Zero is the only number.
Nitrite: the brown-blood stage
Nitrite is the middle of the ladder — the bacteria eat the ammonia halfway, and what they spit out is nitrite. It enters the blood through the gills and blocks oxygen transport. The fish suffocates from the inside; gills turn brown, fish hang at the surface, and the water tests "fine" on ammonia because the ammonia is already gone.
Two things most people don't know. First, in saltwater, the high chloride content competes with nitrite uptake — marine fish tolerate more nitrite than freshwater fish. Second, none of that matters: the target is still 0 ppm. Tolerance is not safety; it's a head start on a timer.
Nitrate: the slow accountant
Nitrate is the end of the ladder — the final product of the nitrogen cycle. It is the least toxic of the three, and the only one where "some" is acceptable. But "some" has a ceiling. At high levels, nitrate fuels algae blooms, stresses corals, and suppresses growth in sensitive species.
The numbers we use: freshwater tanks, keep nitrate under 40 ppm. Reef tanks, under 10 ppm — and for SPS corals, under 5. There is no bacteria that removes nitrate in a home tank; the only exit is a water change. Nitrate is the accountant of the tank: it never lies, it never stops, and it only leaves when you make it leave.
The 0-0-40 rule
Here is the entire guide in three numbers: 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, under 40 nitrate. We call it the 0-0-40 rule, and it is the standard every Ruibit tank must meet before it leaves our factory. We don't ship a system until the water itself passes the test — because a tank that can't hold 0-0-40 will kill fish no matter how good the glass looks.
The six-week rule: be patient with the ladder
A new tank is a construction site, not a home. Ammonia peaks around week 2–3, nitrite peaks around week 3–5, and the colony only matures around week 4–6. Fish added during the peaks are swimming in the worst water of the tank's life.
We call it the six-week rule: don't judge a new tank by day three, and don't stock it like it's a finished system. The bacteria are the filter — the actual filter is just a house for them.
Test like an engineer, not like a shop
Test strips are fast and cheap — and about as accurate as a guess on a good day. Drop tests are slower, but they give you real numbers, and real numbers are what the ladder runs on.
Test every day during the first month, and at least weekly after that. In our factory, every tank is tested every morning, and the readings go into a logbook older than most of our customers' tanks. That habit — not the equipment — is why our systems arrive with their cycles already stable.
The morning reading
Here's how you know the ladder is working. It's 7 a.m., the factory floor is quiet, and you're standing over a test tube holding the morning reading: ammonia, zero. Nitrite, zero. Nitrate, twenty and dropping. The fish are eating like nothing ever happened, because nothing did — the bacteria did their job while you slept.
That's the quiet miracle of the nitrogen cycle, and it's the one number you'll never see on a spec sheet. Ammonia doesn't knock. Neither does the cure. Hold the 0-0-40 line, test like an engineer, and the tank pays you back in the years your fish simply don't die.
