African Cichlids Aquarium Size and Equipment Guide: What Tank Size Works for African Cichlids

From the cichlid wall of the Ruibit Aquarium factory, Foshan — where the mbuna display tank is long, rocky, and never less than half full of fish — a customer asked the question that starts more cichlid disasters than any other.

"I want a few African cichlids," he said. "Three in a 20-gallon should be fine, right?"

We told him the truth he didn't expect: three is the most dangerous number in cichlid keeping. Not one. Not ten. Three.

You don't buy a cichlid. You buy a colony.

Here's the counterintuitive part: African cichlids are not single fish. They're a colony animal — a society with a pecking order, territories, and a relentless appetite for conflict. And the size of your tank isn't decided by "one fish needs X gallons." It's decided by the colony: how many fish it takes to make the aggression safe, and how much space that colony needs.

The math is backwards from every other fish in this series. With a goldfish, fewer fish = safer. With a betta, one fish = perfect. With cichlids, too few is the problem — and three is the worst number of all: three fish means two gang up on one, or one dominates both. There's no balance in three. There's only a hierarchy forming at someone's expense.

The colony rule: six is the floor

The correct number of African cichlids is a group — six to twelve for mbuna (rock-dwelling species) in a 55-gallon tank, more in a 75. We call it the colony rule: when aggression is spread across many fish, no single fish absorbs it all. The chasing happens, the nipping happens, but nobody gets destroyed — because the aggression budget is diluted across the whole colony.

A 55-gallon tank with six to eight mbuna is a working society. A 55-gallon tank with three cichlids is a gladiator arena. The fish count is not a stocking choice; it's a safety choice.

The overstocking paradox: more fish, fewer deaths

Here's the rule that sounds wrong until you see it work: with African cichlids, "overstocking" is a management tool. In a cichlid tank, a slightly higher population spreads aggression so evenly that the tank is actually calmer than a "properly stocked" one.

We call it the overstocking paradox: the fish you're trying to protect are safer when there are more of them. The paradox has one non-negotiable condition, though — the filtration must be oversized to match (see our waste-plant rule; cichlids are high-output fish at any density, and a dense cichlid tank doubles that).

The tank: length beats everything

Cichlid territories are horizontal. A long tank gives each fish a slice of the wall; a tall tank gives nobody anything. The shape rules:

  • Length is the only number that matters. 4 feet minimum for a mbuna colony, 6 feet for the large species (Frontosa, big haps). A 90-gallon cube looks generous and is useless — no territory lines, no escape routes, all conflict.
  • Rockwork is structure, not decoration. Piles of rock and caves do two jobs: they give the chased fish somewhere to disappear (see our escape-route rule), and they break the sightlines — we call it the sightline rule: a cichlid that can't see its rival doesn't fight its rival. Every rock pile is a peace treaty.
  • Crushed coral or sand substrate. Not for looks — for chemistry (see below).

The lake-water rule: this is not "standard" freshwater

Here's what surprises everyone moving from community tanks: African cichlids don't want the soft, slightly acidic water that suits most freshwater fish. They want lake water — hard, alkaline, with a pH of 7.8–8.6, like the Malawi and Tanganyika lakes they come from.

We call it the lake-water rule: the water is part of the fish. Use crushed coral in the substrate or filter as a natural hardness buffer — the substrate is a water conditioner, not decoration — and test pH and hardness weekly. In a cichlid tank, "your water is too soft" is not a detail; it's a disease risk with a timer.

The equipment list: seven things that matter

  1. The tank. 55 gallons minimum for a mbuna colony, 75 better; 125–180 for large species. Long and low, never a cube.
  2. Filtration — oversized. High density plus high output means the filter runs at 4–6 times the tank volume per hour, with a large media chamber. A canister or sump; nothing less.
  3. Heater — mandatory. Cichlids are tropical: 24–27°C, stable, year-round. (The third heated fish in this series — goldfish and koi are cold-water; cichlids, like arowana and bettas, are not.)
  4. Substrate. Crushed coral or coarse sand — the hardness buffer and the territory floor in one.
  5. Rockwork. Piles, caves, overhangs — the sightline rule. No open expanses.
  6. Lighting. Standard is fine. Cichlids don't need high light; the rocks need to be seen, not the water.
  7. A lid. Cichlids jump when startled — and a startled 15-centimeter fish clears the rim easily. Cover it.

And the weekly routine: 25–50% water changes, every week, no exceptions — dense cichlid tanks have no buffer (see our stable-water rule).

The honest warning

African cichlids are not a beginner fish. The colony rule, the sightline rule, the lake-water rule — that's three systems to learn before the fish even arrive. But if you're going to keep them, keep them right: a long tank, a real colony, rockwork that breaks the view, and lake-hard water. The mbuna in our factory display run in exactly that setup — 6 feet of rock and water, and the only injuries we've seen in years are the occasional torn fin, which is the cichlid version of a good day.

The wall

Here's the scene that makes the big tank worth it. It's late afternoon, and the 6-foot display is running — canister filters humming, heater steady at 26°C, the water hard and clear. A dozen mbuna are doing what mbuna do: a male flashing his colors at the rock pile, a female tending her territory, a chase that lasts three seconds and ends behind a rock. No injuries. No dead fish. Just color, motion, and a society that works because it was given the space, the numbers, and the rocks to make peace.

You don't buy a cichlid. You buy a colony — and the colony decides the tank. Give it the length for the territories, the numbers for the balance, the rockwork for the peace, and the lake water it was born in, and the wall of color will run for years, fighting the only way it should: harmlessly.
